You Are Here: Mapping Reston’s Past and Present

Dates: May 27, 2022
Time: 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Jo Ann Rose Gallery at Reston Community Center Lake Anne.
Chris Rooney, a former Reston resident and local history aficionado, leads you on a visual adventure spanning Captain John Smith’s first charting of Chesapeake’s tributaries in the Virginia colony to the soon-to-be updated Metro map for the Silver Line expansion to Dulles. In between, we will learn about George Washington’s involvement in the surveying of the Northern Neck Proprietary for Lord Fairfax, examine Civil War maps where troops marched through the woods and fields of this area, drop in on the short-lived community of Victorian-era Wiehle, see the rise of 20th Century development in the western portion of Fairfax County, and finally, delve deep into the master plan and layout of the windy streets throughout the new town of Reston as it has been marketed, analyzed and inhabited over the last six decades. Along the way, we will discover many curiosities, changes, inaccuracies, and several interesting development proposals that never came to fruition on this chronological tour through what is now Reston. Advanced registration required.
